About Us
History of SAIL
In 1975 SAIL was founded as the School for Applied Individualized Learning, in the belief that all students can learn and succeed when provided a learning environment that meets their needs and interests. SAIL emphasizes individualization, democratic decision making, and application of academics in a humanistic atmosphere. SAIL was the first public alternative school in Florida to be fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. SAIL was recognized as one of the top 20 alternative schools in the nation by Phi Delta Kappa. The SACS Accreditation team wrote, "At SAIL, there seems to be a cement of cooperation, respect, purpose and dedication to the common mission ... it's an outstanding model that should be emulated throughout the state". Students must meet the same credit and grading requirements as other Leon County students. However, the approach is an ever evolving dynamic one that capitalizes on the talents and interests of a diverse staff and student body.

Intensive Study Program
SAIL provides a unique opportunity to all students in the form of Intensives. The week before spring break students participated in a weeklong small group intensive program. The students help to curate these experiences and focus on areas of personal interest, career opportunities, and skill development. Intensives cover a very wide scope of interest and financial obligations so that 100% of SAIL's students will participate. The expectation is that students will learn interpersonal skills whilst studying in a non-traditional setting. Scholarships are available and awarded on a limited bases to help students in financial need.
